Two groups are distinguished: robots built for collaborative use that comply with the ISO 10218-1 safety standard, and robots that follow other safety standards instead — which does not in itself make them unsafe. Machines designed to share a workspace with people, often called cobots, rely on features such as lightweight materials, rounded contours, padding and sensors that keep force and speed below defined thresholds so that direct contact with a worker causes no harm. Deployment is growing quickly: in 2022 almost 55,000 collaborative robots were newly installed, a rise of 31 per cent and 9.9 per cent of all industrial robots installed that year.
