EORI number
An EORI number is the single identifier an economic operator must hold to clear any customs operation in EU customs territory, whether import, export or transit.
It uniquely identifies operators and other persons, only one valid number may be held at a time, and it is assigned by one customs authority alone and then quoted to the customs authorities of EU countries. Numbers do not expire, but they can be invalidated on request or when the trader ceases activity, after which the recorded data is kept for ten years. A public validation service allows a number and its registered name and address to be checked. The cited source covers the EU scheme and does not address the United Kingdom.
