the European market, together with the procedures for assessing conformity. Adopted on 14 June 2023 as Regulation 2023/1230, it replaces the 2006 Machinery Directive and, being a regulation, applies directly in every member state without national transposition. It is aimed at manufacturers and other economic operators such as importers, and it is written to cover newer technology, including autonomous mobile machinery such as robots, connected equipment and AI modules that perform safety functions; high-risk machinery products must go through third-party conformity assessment. Demonstrated compliance is what entitles the manufacturer to draw up the EU declaration of conformity and affix the CE marking. The regulation applies from 20 January 2027, with some rules, such as those on notified bodies, in force earlier.
